Perceptron: A Proficient Enterprise Metrology Partner | Insights Success

With each passing day, the manufacturing world is becoming more and more automated. The industry players; existing as well as emerging corporates are embracing every opportunity to create a platform which can cater to the needs of demand and supply.
Established in 1981, Perceptron is an innovator in the manufacturing world, which excels in being an enterprise metrology partner. Headquartered in Plymouth, Michigan, USA, the company has subsidiary operations in Brazil, China, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, Slovakia, Spain and the UK. Its sensor technology is essential to the future of automation on the plant floor. From robot guidance solutions unloading pallets, to final assembly fit and finish quality checks, Perceptron technology provides reliable information to reduce scrap, minimize rework and improve quality.
Since its establishment, Perceptron is on a mission to be the global leader in supplying advanced metrology technology by helping its customers to identify and solve their measurement and quality problems. The company offers an extensive portfolio of dimensional gauging and inspection products along with robotic guidance, gap & flush measurement, and 3D laser scanning solutions. Acknowledging the ravishing experience of more than three decades, companies rely on Perceptron’s metrology solutions to assist in managing their complex manufacturing processes to improve quality, shorten product launch times and reduce costs.
Over the years, the company has successfully created a niche in its sector and added various feathers to its hat. Its sheer dedication and unified efforts has helped it to attain ISO 9001:2015 Certified Locations including Perceptron, Inc. – Plymouth, Michigan, Perceptron GmbH – Munich, Germany, and Coord3 Italy Srl – Turin, Italy.
The Inception Story
Perceptron (NASDAQ:PRCP) was founded by the graduates of Kettering University. Working closely with the automotive industry, they analyzed and comprehended the damaging effects of process variation on complex product assembly operations and concluded “a process which cannot be measured can never be effectively controlled or optimized.”
Through revolutionary machine vision and pioneering engineering efforts, they have created a unique and innovative measurement solution that not only allowed fast and efficient containment of quality problems, but also provided the ability to pro-actively seek-out and reduce process variation. The result was groundbreaking – the first viable, in-process, 100%-dimensional measurement solution capable of being deployed in the harshest of manufacturing environments.
Leader Holding the Reins
Dave Watza is the President and CEO of Perceptron. He has completed his Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of Michigan. Prior to joining the company, Dave served as the Vice President – Corporate Development at TriMas Corporation, successfully stirring responsibilities related to acquisitions, divestitures, and treasury operations. He possesses more than two decades of experience in engineered products and manufacturing businesses with responsibilities in accounting, finance, and information technology. At Perceptron, the team philosophy starts with Dave and transferred throughout the entire company.
Distinctiveness at its Best!
The in-line process quality control is what best describes Perceptron. Its solutions are robust and made for the plant floor. These solutions involve software and hardware components that meet industry standards and supported with a global infrastructure to ensure successful installations. The company takes a holistic approach to measurement applications and works with the customer to define a solution.
Perceptron’s latest sensor technology, Helixevo, takes scanning to the next level, improving performance through faster measuring and increased overall system robustness. Inside the IP67 rated housing, Helixevo utilizes a green laser to measure the multitude of materials used in today’s manufacturing, such as chrome, aluminum, sheet metal, and painted surfaces. Its best-in-class scan acquisition provides accurate feature extraction along with the pristine scan quality required for form analysis. It also uses a single Power-over-Ethernet (PoE) cable which reduces the number of auxiliary components required and is designed for fast and accurate measurement on the plant floor.
At Perceptron, the software that analyzes and reports on the measurement scan data is constantly improving to reduce cycle time and improve measurement accuracy and repeatability. Historical data is available to monitor process improvements and troubleshoot issues as they arise. The company follows an agile development process and is extremely helpful in keeping all employees dedicated and fully-utilized. Also, the company believes that participation from the global team is critical for design requirements, product reviews, and to make sure all customers have a voice regardless of location.
Futuristic Vision
Perceptron’s mission is to be the global leader in supplying advanced metrology technology by helping customers to identify and solve their measurement and quality problems. The company aims to offer value to its customers from the system on the first part manufactured. It will continue to work on ease-of-use and workflows to simplify setup, recovery to make the operator’s job easier and help guide their quality improvements.
