CCI asks Feedback from App Makers on Google’s New Payment Policy

Google’s New Payment Policy

The Competition Commission of India (CCI) has asked for feedback about Google’s upcoming payment policy from app makers. India’s antitrust regulator has sought the details to check how Google’s payment policies are impacting the business growth for app owners.

Google’s payment policy modifications, now pushed for October 2022, has asked certain categories of apps on Play Store to compulsorily use Google Billing System (GBS) to accept payments from app users. Google will be charging 30% commission on those payments, which is much higher than the 2% commission that is charged by other payment gateways.

“We are seeking the app makers response to understand in what way the Google’s upcoming payment policy changes will impact apps business models, and see if there is a possibility of some changes worked out between involved parties.” stated the source, who is familiar with the ongoing process.

“Once the CCI Director General gives probe report on the matter, we will take it further for adjudication.” said the source. The CCI expects to complete the probe by February end.
