Olympics of the year 2020 were not supposed to be held in Tokyo so soon. However, owing to Covid-19 safety concerns, it was eventually decided to take place in July 2021. The Olympics 2020 began on July 23,2021 and are about to end on August 8th. Here is the list of medallists and winners from the 2020 Olympic Games in India.
At the Tokyo International Forum, Mirabai Chanu took silver in the women’s 49kg division. During her four successful tries at the competition, Chanu lifted a total of 202 kg (87 kg in snatch and 115 kg in clean and jerk).
P.V. Sindhu made history by defeating China’s He Bing Jiao to become the first Indian woman to win two individual Olympic gold. In the bronze medal match, Sindhu defeated He Bing Jiao 21-13 and 21-15. Sindhu remained unflappable throughout the match, not giving her opponent any chance to win.
Lovlina Borgohain, made history on Wednesday August 4 by becoming the second female boxer to earn an Olympic bronze medal, following MC Mary Kom. However, Lovlina, who was competing in her first Olympics, claimed that she was unsatisfied with her bronze medal in the women’s welterweight (64-69kg) division, claiming that she had trained for gold in the current TIFAF World Championships.
India’s men’s team defeated Germany 5-4 and wins a bronze, ending a 41-year drought for an Olympic medal in hockey. The last time India won a hockey medal was at the 1980 Moscow Olympics, when they won gold.
India is presently ranked 62nd in the medal standings. However, with only three days left in the Tokyo Olympics, India still has few major medal chances in its various events.
