The New Mangalore Port Trust has registered a growth of 15 per cent in total throughput during the first nine months of the current financial year.
Speaking of the Republic Day celebrations at New Mangalore Port, PC Parida, Chairman of NMPT, told that the port listed a progress of 24% in the handling of container cargo during the period.
The total amount of the port stood at 29.09 million tonnes in April-December of 2016-17 as alongside 25.28 million tonnes in the corresponding period of 2015-16, recording a growth of 15.07 per cent.
The port handled 66,848 TEUs of containers in the first nine months of 2016-17 as against 53,874 TEUs during the corresponding period of the earlier fiscal, recording a growth of 24.08 per cent.
The port is scheduled to grip 30 cruise vessels during the existing financial year. Of them, 18 vessels have previously been handled so far. The port handled 16,259 cruise passengers through the current financial year, he claimed.
NMPT, which has well-arranged a 4.35-MW solar plant, is in the development by installing extra 3.5-MW solar plant. Parida believed that the port has dedicated the berth 3, which has a draft of 9.5 metres, for the coastal movement of cargo. This move will help reduce the road congestion and increase coastal trade, he added.
