Offline Digital Payment

To promote digital transactions in rural areas, the Reserve Bank of India has allowed offline payments up to ₹200 per transaction. With an overall offline digital payment limit of ₹2000, under the offline mode of transaction, payments can be carried out without the connectivity of the internet or telecom connectivity.

Offline digital payments can be carried out face-to-face which is proximity mode. Debit cards, wallets, or mobile devices can be used to carry out this offline digital transaction. After the transaction, an alert text will be sent to the customer through SMS or e-mail.

Experiments to test the offline digital payments were conducted in different parts of the country between September 2020 to June 2021. Feedback from the experiments laid the foundation of the offline digital payment infrastructure.
