Mukesh Ambani is attempting to advance the field of genetic mapping, which may help identify a person’s propensity for specific illnesses and diseases like cancer, neurodegenerative disorders, cardiac risks, etc.
The comprehensive Rs 12,000 genome sequencing test, created by Strand Life Sciences, will be made available by Ambani’s Reliance Industries.
Overview
According to Strand CEO Ramesh Hariharan, the genome test costs $145 and is about 86% less expensive than comparable local options. He claimed it would be the least costly genomic profile in the world. He predicts that the low price will spark adoption.
Strand will use the most recent findings in science, according to Hariharan, when interpreting the test results. The testing will enable the building a database of biological information that could help create medicines.
Businesses create Ancestry reports like the US-based 23andMe for $99, but its health plus ancestry reports cost $199. Indian companies like MapmyGenome and Medgenome charge over $1,000 for whole genome sequencing for red health flags.
Some Chinese companies sell reports for less money but do not include all of the tests. In the upcoming weeks, Reliance intends to promote the test on the MyJio app aggressively.
End Note
In the US, much consumer interest revolves around tracing one’s ancestry or personal traits like athleticism, hair texture, or propensity to gain weight. The focus of the longer-term business plan is on preventive healthcare. Genetic test regulations have not been established in India yet.
