The spread of fake news and morphed photos was already a major problem everywhere. There was a phase when fake news rained over social media apps such as Watsapp and Facebook . This had become a rising concern in India. Such viral photos and videos on Facebook and Watsapp had dangerous consequences. Another problem that is on the rise is that of the “deep-fake” videos.
Deep-fake videos are those fake videos which appear real. They are infact so real that the users can’t detect the fake in them. An example would be when a video of an influential personality is mophed in a way that the audio and video quality makes it appear as if it was that person who said that.
The spread of such deep fake videos getting viral on watsapp and facebook are becoming a real issue. The major problem with social platforms is that the resolution on such platforms is very low or bad quality which makes it really difficult to identify such fake videos.
Deep- fake videos of influential people such as politicians and activists could be used to spread misinformation and create unnecessary chaos. This tactic could be used by the perpetrators to infiltrate the common public with non- sense.
Such deep-fake videos could be easily made using different people and could be easily published using generic apps.
