Our products are engineered from the ground up and target tested for the Indian conditions and other developing markets. I am the Founder and CEO of Log 9 Materials and a classic powerhouse. My journey in the green energy space dates back to my college days at IIT Roorkee, I was enthralled by Graphene and several projects later, I knew I had to make the most of this wonder material.

With exhaustive research and practical experience, I realized the need for commercial production of high-quality nanomaterials, started my own venture – Log 9 Materials. Six plus years into entrepreneurship now, I spearhead log9’s product development and dissemination.

Along with my team, I have established Log 9 Materials as one of India’s leading nanotechnologies and deep-technology startups. Keen on progressive action for Climate Change, I also have, in the recent years, ventured into angel investing in start-ups with net positive environment goals.

What kind of green solutions or services does your company provide?

Green is the new Black – Electric Vehicles are here and they are here to stay. The idea of commercial fleet companies, who run millions of two or three wheelers on road, going all-electric, calls out a win-win situation for the said companies, (think soaring petrol/diesel costs) and the Planet.

We took EV Batteries for two and three wheelers and shot them to the next level.

Integrating safety, performance, and efficiency, Log9’s rapid charging EV batteries have transformed expectations for the energy storage division. We are running pilots of our utility batteries and have joined forces with leading Indian e-com fleet operators like Amazon, Shadow fax, Delivery, etc. To deploy fast-charging batteries in their two-wheeler and three-wheeler EVs.

We have also entered a strategic partnership with Omega Seiki Pvt. Ltd., part of Anglian Omega Group of Companies, to introduce the rapid charging batteries technology in Omega Seiki’s Rage+ electric three-wheeler platform (commercial three-wheelers).

For a better grip on the impact of such partnerships on the planet, we did some math: Assuming a daily usage of 100 km, which is pretty common for any commercial last-mile vehicle, the total carbon footprint of the last mile fleet operation in India alone is more than that of the entire population of Singapore!

Two economy terms that will reset cleaner modes of energy generation: Substitution and Dematerialization. We summon circular economy by being one of the only two companies globally to build no-emission Aluminum-air fuel cells.

Throw in aluminum and a graphene-based novel air-cathode, your cars and homes can now run-on air and water, with no hassle of NOx, SOx, or other greenhouse gases.

Apart from the above ingenuities in the green energy sector, Log 9 has also expanded its product line to graphene-based filters and to address oil and chemical spills.

What kind of challenges have you faced industry-wise?

IC engine is ruling the Indian automotive space for over 80 years. Though EV stands to be the new cool kid who has been the talk of the town. Going electric is commonly perceived to be ‘expensive’ and as a luxury instead of a battle cry for a sustainable commute. Looking into the minds of an average Indian consumer, who:

  • Are daunted by the on-road price for EVs as compared to a conventional IC two-wheeler
  • Fear charging would take forever and finding charging stations
  • Has second thoughts on the performance reliability of the vehicle
  • Think batteries are gold diggers that need to be replaced every two-three year
  • Are anxious about EV mileage
  • Trusts only well-known monopolies and has little confidence in new companies and startups,

We find that changing an eighty-year-old mindset with a six-year-old company and the mass education of an underlying 21st-century, tech can be an uphill battle. Being in the green energy business, how important do you think sustainability is? How are you contributing to a sustainable future through your company?

Sustainability is a crucial ally for any company and not just a CSR campaign. Only by expanding the economic, social, and environmental spheres we can maximize the volume of sustainable development. Our hearts lie at the Equitable use of resources, bearable load on the environment, and viable inter-generational products.

What would be your advice to the budding entrepreneurs who aspire to venture into the green energy business?

Do what you love, save the planet, and make a buck out of it. Tech entrepreneurs who aspire to enter the green energy space get the real deal. The entrepreneurship sprint will indeed be a rollercoaster ride, filled with ups and downs and infinite coffee runs. Having a strong sense of purpose will blur the lines between the fluctuations and illuminate the bigger picture.

Delivering products that work out all user pressure points and improve user’s quality of life will be the ultimate driving force you need for your venture.

Where do you envision yourself and your company to be in the long run and what are your future goals?

We have the solutions and the breakthroughs. Extrapolating in this direction, we mean to locally produce new battery cell technologies including supercapacitors, high-power lithium cells, and aluminium fuel cells.
Our secret game plan is to witness a chain of multiplication in the number of Vehicles with Log9 batteries on the road while eyeing the near net-zero carbon footprint. Also, stay on your toes to witness our advanced battery cell manufacturing plant come to light.

What is the current scenario of the green energy space of India?

Although the big names in the energy and mobility space have diversified to green fields, their efforts are overshadowed by the global carbon emissions (over 70%). However, there is visible spurge in the absolute number of start-ups nucleated in the green energy sector and particularly, the EV business. The green energy space knows it has a winner with the number of scientists, engineers, and innovators pouring in to avoid a climate disaster.
