Imagine standing on a hilltop experiencing the gorgeous views of forests and mountains, breathing the fresh crisp air. Or a challenging river rafting session working together with the guide, making your way through rough waters, past beaches and villages. These are just two of the many ways we can experience nature and rejuvenate ourselves.
However, finding and trusting a partner or an agency with the expertise, and who understands our requirements, is a daunting task. The size of the group, their experience and abilities, and the difficulty level of the destination are factors that demand expert assistance, planning, and thoughtful utilization of resources.
We’d like to introduce to you to an enthusiastic team who are highly passionate about delivering ‘out-of-the-world’ adventure travel experiences at some of the finest locations in India. As one of the pioneers of adventure travel in India MHE (Mercury Himalayan Explorations) Adventures, in association with Mercury Travels, have formed one of the largest adventure travel networks in the Indian subcontinent.
Be it an epic road trip, trekking and climbing expeditions, or even white water rafting along with skiing and snowboarding, MHE Adventures is a ‘one-stop’ platform that offers exciting travel experiences to guests from across the globe. With a legacy of over forty glorious years, the pioneering spirit and numerous awards and industry recognitions received over the years have cemented MHE Adventures as the leading travel brand in India.
The Leading lights
Akshay Kumar, the CEO of MHE, needs no further introduction when it comes to adventure travel in India. A rafting guide, national-level skier, trekker, 4×4 specialist, ice hockey friend, and thrill seeker; Akshay has created countless milestones in his career and continues to rock the traveling domain with his business acumen. His biggest joy today is taking his little daughter on treks in the Himalaya, or watching her ski down the slopes of Gulmarg,
Akshay trained as a river guide in Canada when he was 15 and has rafted down over 30 rivers across India and Canada; led the first-ever descent of the Brahmaputra river in Arunachal Pradesh in 1990; was the leader of the first trekking group to the Nanda Devi Base Camp after a gap of 22 years in 2001, and led the first-ever Isuzu Challenge Expedition in India – a first of its kind offroad jeep safari across the upper Himalayan region. In short, he’s a true-blue adventurer. The pistes of Kashmir have been his home ground since he was three and the Calgary Winter Games in 1988 would have been his Olympic debut, but for an unfortunate skiing accident while training in Val Thorens, France.
His Father, Col. Narinder ‘Bull’ Kumar is the mentor and Founder of MHE and is a recipient of the coveted MacGregor Medal, IMF Gold Medalist, a Padma Shri, an Arjuna Awardee and Fellow of the Royal Geographic Society. India’s most celebrated mountain climber, he planted India’s flag on the Siachen Glacier in 1981 for the very first time! ‘Kumar Post’ at Siachen is named after him, and he is perhaps the only living person from the Indian armed forces to receive this singular honour.

Technology – The Game Changer
Technology and innovation have been the game changers in today’s modern era. The social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and Twitter have provided an opportunity to reach a much larger audience along with the applications that make marketing a much easier job. With improved connectivity to the remote areas, technology has been quite helpful for MHE. On the other hand, easy connectivity has loosened the charm of the wilderness, as guests are glued to their cell phones. Many tour operators, unlike MHE, do not have all inclusive prices on their websites, which creates confusion and misinformation in the minds of potential travelers who focus only on the listed price, without checking the inclusions carefully.
Future enrichments
MHE Adventures is focused on creating outdoor recreational and educational travel itineraries, as it endeavors to enable business and corporates to enjoy the great outdoors and learn from it. Having an optimistic view of the future, it plans to open new destinations and lodges in remote locations that allow it to expand capacity and build circuits. In addition, ramping up the activity portfolio and introducing accessible tourism is also a key to their growth path.
