Hosmac India is a pioneering name in the field of Hospital Planning & Management consultancy in India. Since its inception in 1996, Hosmac has grown rapidly to become a unique hub of skill sets which cuts across various facets of a health care industry ranging from Business Consultancy, Market Intelligence reports, Due Diligence, Turnkey Hospital Design, Project Management, Equipment Planning & Procurement, Commissioning hospitals, Operational audits, etc.
The company understands the vision and sentiment behind building a healthcare facility and the unique nature of its demands. Against this backdrop, the company provides an invaluable range of total solutions to suit the elaborate requirements of their clients not only efficiently, but with precedence to quality service within the framework of an ISO 9001:2008 certification. The firm has established its presence in India and Middle East and has 120 employees and is considered a pioneering name in the ‘Healthcare Consulting arena in Asia.’
Hosmac India is the result of zealous efforts of Dr. Vivek Desai, Founder & Managing Director. He started his career as a doctor, acquired his MBBS degree from the Rabindranath Tagore Medical College, Udaipur, and then did management training in various prestigious colleges in India like Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS Mumbai), Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies (NMIMS, Mumbai) Birla Institute of Technlogy & Science (BITS, Pilani).
Initially, Dr. Vivek worked as an Administrative Medical Officer at Hinduja Hospital, Mumbai for nine months. This is where he realized that his calling was for Hospital Administration and went on to first work with HOSPIC (a consultancy firm in Mumbai), and then in 1996 went on to establish Hosmac India. The company initially started working on feasibility reports and market research and then gradually went on to get the prestigious project of designing Asian Heart Institute, Mumbai in 1999. Dr. Desai with his associates over a period of 20 years have multiplied to a team of 120 people with offices located in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, and Dubai. Hosmac had no looking back and started bagging consultancy projects like Dr. LH Hiranandani Hospital, Godrej Memorial Hospital, Apollo Hospitals, Fortis Healthcare, Max Healthcare, Hinduja Hospital, Lilavati Hospital, Medanta, Believer’s Church Medical College, CMC Vellore, and multilateral agencies and private equity funds like World Bank, USAID, WHO, Carlyle, Actis Advisory, Warburg Pincus, IFC, etc.
Hosmac has notched up an impressive string of projects in India and abroad. Hosmac provides the entire range of services that any health care service provider may require: undertaking market research, feasibility studies, detailed architectural design, project coordination, equipment procurement, commissioning assistance, conducting an operational audit for existing hospitals.
“To provide wide-ranging services, Hosmac has a motivated team of highly qualified and experienced professionals (doctors, MBAs, architects, engineers, and project managers). On a cumulative basis, these professionals have rendered more than 500,000 man hours of consulting services to over 500 clients, designed 20.0 million Square feet of hospital space, and have coordinated hospital projects worth more than 10.0 billion INR,” says Dr. Vivek Desai.
While discussing initial challenges faced by the company, Dr. Desai revealed, “Initially, Hosmac concentrated more on quantitative growth but later, started focusing on qualitative talent. There was a lack of concentration on initial Brand Positioning and Marketing, which was later taken care by hiring services of a PR agency, designing a dynamic website, and participation in industry exhibitions/conferences. Data security was an issue, and proper precautions were taken to safeguard the data.” Hosmac stays on top of what’s next in the services which helped the company immensely to overcome stagnation. Hosmac’s design studio uses REVIT software from Autodesk which designs hospitals in 3D to avoid any clash of services during construction phase and also helps in accurate quantity estimation. “The company identifies new technology as a key enabler to accelerate their transformative strategies. Since the company aimed at growing fast, the only option was to keep diversifying which helped them to generate funds for growth by providing different types of services, and also kept them ahead of the competition,” Dr. Desai added.
At a personal level, Dr. Desai’s ambition is to set up an educational center of excellence for healthcare management and research. Continuing his efforts to contribute meaningfully to the industry, he and his young team launched Healthcare Executive, a business magazine devoted to the sector and in a short span of four years has become a must read for healthcare managers and is available as an App on iOS and Google Play. The magazine also organizes a Thought Leadership Summit every year to commemorate Hosmac’s commitment to innovation’s in the field of healthcare.
Hosmac India set up Hosmac Middle East in the Dubai Healthcare City in 2007 and later shifted to an owned premise in the JLT Multimodal free zone in 2012, with another branch office in Abu Dhabi opened in 2016, and is already doing work in UAE, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, and Africa.
